Prime Minister Barzani meets with German Ambassador to Iraq

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) - Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received German Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Cyrill Nunn and his accompanying delegation on Monday.

Ambassador Nunn reiterated the need for a serious dialogue between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad within the framework of the Iraqi constitution and also showed his support for a strong government in the Kurdistan Region.

He praised the people and the government of the Kurdistan Region for having accommodated and offered assistance to a very large number of displaced persons, who fled ISIS atrocities. He reiterated that Germany, through non-governmental organizations and in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government institutions, will continue to provide support to the refugees and internally displaced persons.

Prime Minister Barzani thanked the role of both German government and German NGOs in supporting the refugees and internally displaced persons in the Kurdistan Region, noting that their role has been significant and hoped that they continue their work.

Regarding the relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, Prime Minister Barzani said that Germany could play a positive role in starting negotiations between the Kurdistan Region and Iraqi authorities and in resolving outstanding issues, asserting that Baghdad should deal with the Kurdistan Region in accordance with the Constitution. He also reiterated that the factors that led to the rise of the so-called Islamic State terror group must be addressed by the federal government of Iraq, in order to prevent further violence in the country.
